Samuel Martin (planter)
Samuel Martin (1694 in Greencastle Estate – 1776) was a prominent planter in Antigua. Samuel Martin was born on the Greencastle Estate, Antigua, the son of Major Samuel Martin, who, in 1701, was murdered during a slave revolt after having demanded the slavery, enslaved African people, Africans on his estate work on Christmas Day. The seven year old Samuel escaped a similar fate, being hidden in nearby fields by his nanny. She was herself enslaved and was subsequently manumission, freed in recognition of this act. Samuel was sent to live in Ireland while his mother remarried Edward Byam. He wrote ''Essay upon Plantership'' (1754), a treatise on managing a sugar plantation. Martin fathered 21 children, at least sixteen of whom died during his lifetime. Samuel Martin (1 September 1714 – 20 November 1788) was an Antiguan-born politician, administrator and plantation owner. Family He was born on the West Indies island of Antigua, the son of Samuel Martin, the leading plantation owner on the island. He had three notable half-brothers: Sir Henry Martin, 1st Baronet (1733–1794), for many years naval commissioner at Portsmouth and Comptroller of the Navy, and the father of Thomas Byam Martin; Josiah Martin (1737–1786), Governor of North Carolina from 1771 and William Byam Martin, a merchant and official of the East India Company who returned to England as wealthy nabob. His full-sister Henrietta (Rilla) Fitzgerald was the mother of poet William Thomas Fitzgerald and mother-in-law of equity lawyer John Fonblanque KC MP for Camelford 1802–1806. Sir Samuel Martin QC (1801 – 9 January 1883) was an Anglo-Irish politician and judge. Early life and education Martin was born in 1801, the son of Samuel Martin of Calmore, County Londonderry. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, receiving a BA in 1821 and an MA in 1832. He became a student at Gray's Inn in 1821 and practiced as a special pleader. He transferred to the Middle Temple in 1826, and was called to the bar in 1830. In 1838, he married Frances Homera, the daughter of Sir Frederick Pollock, Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer. She died on 19 April 1874, aged 56. Career Martin was active as a barrister on the Northern Circuit, and gained a reputation for skill. He took silk in 1845. He entered the House of Commons for Pontefract in 1847 as a Liberal, after a closely fought contest. Samuel Elmo Martin (29 January 1924 – 28 November 2009) was a linguist known for seminal work on the languages of East Asia, a professor at Yale University, and the author of many works on the Korean and Japanese languages. Biography Martin was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on 29 January 1924, and grew up in Emporia, Kansas. During World War II he was trained as a Japanese Language Officer, and was stationed in Japan at the end of the war. After the war, he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in Oriental Languages. He graduated in 1947, but stayed on at Berkeley to study for a master's degree in linguistics under Chao Yuen Ren, which he completed in 1949. He then went to Yale University to study for a PhD in Japanese Linguistics under Bernard Bloch. Sam Alan Martin (born 2 February 1989, in Bedford Park, Adelaide, Australia) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Martin began his British league career when he signed for the junior team of the Oxford Cheetahs (or Silver Machine which they were known as that season). The juniors were called the Oxford Silver Machine Academy and competed in the 2004 Speedway Conference League. The following season he rode for Oxford again and won the 2005 Speedway Conference League before joining Boston Barracudas in 2006. He returned to Oxford for 2007.
